DIY Stamping tool …

June 30, 2016 By 8UpScrapin 36 Comments

Hello Scrappy Friends !!!

It’s been awhile since Ive shared one on my DIY tricks or projects so today I am sharing how I made my own stamping tool , I do have a MISTI and love it and I really wanted an extra one for travel ( I would cry if I lost the MISTI or if  it got broken  , a backup is always nice ) I could not really find any step by step help on this so I made one and it was surprisingly easy so maybe that is why no step by step tutorials , but it’s always nice to have a guide to go by so let’s get started : )

It all started with a family trip to Ikea ( about an hour from me )

File Jun 30, 8 54 01 AM

in Ikea is section 19 you will find the most awesome from opening frame called Hemmingsbo its 8.5″ by 11″ , sadly this can not be ordered online but you will be happy to know they are only 4.99 , very reasonable  , I got two one for me and one for a friend

File Jun 30, 8 19 36 AMthis is what it looks like compared to my MISTI
File Jun 30, 8 19 56 AM

I flip over the frame to the back and pry off the frame kickstand  and add a strong double sided tape , I am going to finish off the back so it looks nice and wont scratch surfaces , see the hanger hooks on the back we don’t want to see that
File Jun 30, 8 21 04 AM

now we are going to cut down a sheet of 3 MM fun foam and insert it into the indent on the back , now you have a nice finished back side …

File Jun 30, 8 21 23 AM

inside I add an 8.5″  x 11′ sheet of adhesive magnet ( this is from Oriental Trading ) but Hobby Lobby has and so does Home Depot as vent covers , you can add your own glue if you cant find some with it on already , now you can use magnets to help hold your paper in place , you can also use washi tape

File Jun 30, 8 21 49 AM

next I add a vinyl templet grid sheet from Dritz Quilting , this is so I can stamp my word on it to make sure its lined up and straight , you can wipe it clean after you stamp on it  , you will also see I added a A2 size pc of fun foam  until I get to the store for an *.5 ” by 11 ” sheet , you will need this when stamping with clear stamps , it raises the stamping surface and allows for cushioned stamping and we all know you get a better stamp image this way  , by the way the clear tabs came on the frame I left them on as they help hold your paper in place
File Jun 30, 8 22 28 AM

and the last step is to replace that plastic from with a piece of plexi -glass , I have my hardware store cut this to exact size for me and this ran bout 6 bucks  , you can glue in with E6000 or just use prongs to hold it in , this will not sit flush to top door but that is okay you want that for you foam mounted rubber stamps

File Jun 30, 8 22 55 AM

so as you can see I added links to products so you could see exactly what I used when making this , hope you found it helpful , please share this post with others because we all want cheaper ways of doing things right : ) leave me some feedback with question or if you found this helpful ,

my stamping tool ran me about $60 dollars this DIY version ran me about $13 to $15 I had several things at home already.

UPDATE >> I found a pack of ten magnets on ebay , this is the cheapest i found , you wont need 10 , just two so share with a friend so you only spend $2 bucks .. magnets

Hi. We do have Ikea in Canton, MI & it is very easy to find. There is also 2 near Chicago in Schaumburg and Bolingbrook, IL on way to Wisconson. I’m just over an hour and half from the Canton Ikea and make a day of it when I go. Lots of other great shopping in the area as well as good eats 🙂 Worth a day out! Good luck!!

I made some by your directions and are great. Thank you so much.
Question, how thick of plexi glass did you get and where did you get magnets? I got magnets at Michael but do not seem strong enough over foam which I got at Michaels but not sure if it is thon enough.
    Thanks again!

I am so glad you foung this helpful ,I got my magnets from Amazon but I think they are out , I was told Home Depot has them and I also saw some smaller ones at Micheals , be sure to cover them with washi tape and leave a tail so you can pull them apart easily . .. exp if the magnet is 1/2 ” cut tape 2″ fold in half and insert magnet at inside fold adhere tape to itself and magnet you are left with a magnet covered with a 1/2″ tail .

Did you put the Dritz graph on the plexiglass AND the magnetic side, or just one? It looks like both in the photos. Thanks!

the Dritz is on inside, but its removable , in one picture I did move it and set on the front , its just a tool to make sure the stamping is straight .

Oh my gosh Crystal, this is awesome!!!!! what an amazing find and you are so incredibly generous, clever and resourceful to think of this incredible and fabulous DIY stamping machine and share how to make it with us.
I live about 60 miles East of Chicago and the closest Ikea store is all the way past O’Hare Airport but, if I don’t find anything around here like this frame, I will definitely order it from Ikea on line.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial.
    Have a fabulous day!!
    Hugs,
    Maria Rodriguez.

I’m sorry to ask but the last step you say is to replace the plastic with plexi? What plastic are you speaking of?
    Thank you!
P.S. I’m on a road trip with grandkids…hence it’s hard to comprehend anything at this point! Hehe

I love this idea. I have made a smaller homemade Misti using a DVD case, but really wanted something larger. Now to wait until this summer when an Ikea opens up closer to me. Also I have purchased some earth magnets at Harbor Freight which are super strong and very reasonably priced that I think would work well for this.
