Carved Watermelon Fruit tray

August 3, 2012 By 8UpScrapin 1 Comment

Today I am my post has nothing to do with cards or scrapbooking  ( gasp , shock .. I know ) . A good friend of mine’s  ( Kathleene ) son was turning 19 and she wanted to make him something other than a cake or cupcakes , so she found this awesome shark fruit tray on Pintrest and asked if I would help carve it  , we were a tag tem on this project , I carved and she melon balled the fruit and assembled it .. we make a great team … smile : )

We took a semi oval watermelon washed it and then sliced off a sliver ( about 1.5 inches ) from the end so it would slightly slant as if coming out of the water , this will make your melon stable to do the rest of the carving
Next we took a marker and drew the mouth on it , remember not too big  , but big enough to use a spoon to scoop out the fruit when serving  , then you use a knife and cut that slice out , insert point of the knife like you would carve a pumpkin
After you take that slice away save as part of this will be your fin ,  , next score a 1/2 ” line behind your cut opening and you will only tak off the green rind to revel the white membrane ( teeth )
Next you will take a paring knife and start in front and make the points for the teeth , knock away the negative portion that will not remain for the teeth ..
Next take a melon baller or a hole punch for doughnuts and make indention for the eyes ( insert a grape for eyes with a toothpick )
the left over from mouth opening cut in half and cut away any pink and attach the fin to back side of melon with tooth picks
your shark is now complete , scoop out melon cut into chunks or melon ball it and add other fruits of your liking and tah dah you have the most awesome center piece / fruit tray ever …
this creation was made by Crystal and Kathleen … crafty friends : )
